Day 2 

# 2  Lady-In-Waiting:
Eve 

HER NAME MEANS  "Mother of all living". 

                        

Her story is found in Genesis 1 - 4 

 Genesis1:27 God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him, male and female, he created them. Genesis 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom , she took some and ate it. Genesis 3:13 Then the LORD GOD said the woman,” what is this you have done?” Genesis 3:15 I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring and hers, he will crush your head... Genesis 4:1 Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said,”with the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man.” 

Her Character: 

Eve was the first mother, the woman God chose to be the mother of all living. She was hand made by God and lived in a beautiful home. She had the perfect Father, paradise for her home, and a sinless husband.  She did not know the meaning of shame, hurt, estrangement, bitterness or grief until she listened to a lie and disobeyed God and sin entered in. She would now have to experience death and all these other sorrows. She began to doubt God. She ended her life trusting and waiting on the Lord.  

What she waited for: 

Eve along with her husband Adam, were given a promise that the seed of the woman would crush the head of the serpent and God would send a rescuer. 
She waited for this savior. 
Thinking it might be her child, she waited child after child but no redeemer. 
She died waiting.

  I was asked to speak to a group of Christian ladies on Mother’s Day. I chose to speak about some of the mothers in the Bible, starting with Eve. I was reminded again how sad her story is because of sin. We all have to experience that sadness, and death. But, we also see the hope Eve had because of God’s love, as we also have that hope!

She was the first to experience the consequence of death. And what a tragic way to experience death. Through her own son. He was killed by her first son. She was told she would die when she ate the fruit from the forbidden tree, but I don’t think she understood what death would be like until this moment when she found out that her own son had been killed. She had expected to die first.  Parents are suppose to die before their children. But that is not what always happens. This was a brutal death. No one has the right to take another’s life! But, sin is the reason for our sorrows and the imperfect world we live in. We ourselves are sinful. But God our Father has a plan. He told Eve about his plan. A plan with a promise. When we confess our sin He is faithful and will forgive us our sins. He sent His son, the promised seed of Eve, to die for us and to save us. 

God made each of us and has a purpose for us, even when we don’t see it or when tragic things happen in our lives. Eve had many children. But we are only told about three. Two of them had tragic lives, and Seth, from whom's linage Christ was born. 

Eve is known for having the first murderer, her son. Can you imagine, she brought this sin into the world. This son of hers followed sin to the worst conclusion, death, and death of another living being. So, when God writes the story of this killing who is blamed? The responsibility for sin is on the individual. Eve had been given her curse and had to live with the consequences, now Cain would be given a curse and have to live with it.

Eve was also the mother of Able. He was a victim of a severe crime and he was taken away from her. This was the child who was the shining star, the one who followed God’s ways and did well in the eyes of God. And yet God allowed him to be killed. I believe that Eve’s prayer was that God would send the savior soon so that she and her family would not have to suffer much longer. 


 I have an excerpt from the Women of The Bible one year Devotional by Ann Spangler that I would like to share.  I found several wonderful stories in this devotional and will use them in some of my following blogs. Today's is from Eve; Monday's devotional, regarding her story. 

Sorrow upon sorrow entered the heart of the first woman, and the last we see of her we imagine her not as a creature springing fresh from God’s hands, but as a woman in anguish. Her skin, damaged by sun and age, now stretches like rough canvas across her limbs. Her hands are restless spiders, clawing the stony ground beneath her, grasping for something to ease her pain. She can feel the child inside, filling her, his body pressing for a way of escape. The cries of mother and child meet like two streams converging. And Seth is born. 

With her child cradled against her breast, relief begins to spread across Eve’s face. As she rests, a smile forms, and then, finally, laughter rushes from her lips. Try as she might, she can’t stifle her joy.  For she remembers the Brightness and the Voice and the promise God gave: Sooner or later, despite many griefs, her seed would crush the serpent. 

Eve was a lady in waiting. 

“We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield.” Psalm 33:20 

TO PONDER IN YOUR HEART:  Are you a woman who puts her hope in the Lord? God loves you so much and it hurts Him that His children have to suffer this way because of sin. He sent His only son to die for us.  Our time away from God is only temporary, this is our hope!
