# 8 Lady in Waiting:
Bathsheba
HER NAME MEANS "The daughter of an oath."
TO PONDER IN YOUR HEART: If God could forgive this terrible sin of David, don't you think he could forgive your sin, whatever it may be?
HER NAME MEANS "The daughter of an oath."
Her Story: 2 Samuel 11:1 - 12:25
In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem. One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (She had purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she went back home. The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”
It goes on in the next verses to share how King David has her husband killed then marries her. The child dies, and then he comforts his new wife and she has another child, Solomon. He becomes King.

Her Character:
Although it is difficult to discern her character we know a few things about her. Her first marriage was to a devote Jewish man. She found courage to endure tragedy. She won the compassion of the King. She was the mother of Solomon.
What she waited for:
To see what God had in store for her son, because God loved him and sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedediah, meaning friend of God/ blessed of God. And for the fruition of David's dream to build a temple for God.
The story of David and Bathsheba outlines in graphic detail; the horror of sin and where it leads. Bathsheba is linked with David and his sin. We do not know what part she played in all of this, because the Bible does not give all the details. God pronounced David's judgement through Nathan, the prophet. Nathan applied the parable about the little ewe lamb to David's sin and he repented. David acknowledged his sin. David's two great sins were committed when he remained in Jerusalem instead of being out with his army where he should have been. David first committed adultery and then murdered her husband. The child that was conceived through this adulterous act died as punishment for David's sin, because what David did made the enemies of the Lord show utter contempt.( see 2 Samuel 12:14). Bathsheba grieved the loss of her child. God allowed her to have another child whom they named Solomon, but God called him Jedidiah- friend of God!
The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.
Exodus 34:6-7
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14
For I (God) will forgive their wickedness and
will remember their sins no more.
Hebrews 8:12
The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.
